Yes, I was thinking the same thing when my mom told me dad was going to receive it. Apparently, it's a pretty big deal...in the scouting world that is. This is the highest award you can receive in the scouting program. You don't earn it like the eagle, you give a lot of years of service in scouting and then somebody nominates you (usually unknowingly). These are pictures from the annual Silver Beaver Award Ceremony. Thats a good question, all I know is that we were lucky the Jazz game was sold out that night and were only gone for about 20 minutes. Mike's brother brought us the spare keys, since it was his car after all. I have been giving Mike a hard time for that ever since.

Well, I guess you could say that karma eventually catches up. The other day, when the high was about 15 degrees outside I locked the keys in the car with Oliver buckled in his car seat...I know!! Again, how does this happen? Well, I will tell you. Have you ever been carrying a two year old along with your purse and maybe a bag of shopping? It's pretty hard to put that toddler in his car seat holding all that stuff, right? I have gotten into the habit of throwing everything (but Oliver, of course) into the front seat while I get him in and buckled. That day I accidentally pushed the lock button on my keys while I was getting Oliver into the car, completely ignoring the fact that the horn was going off, meaning the doors were locked. I hurried and threw everything in the front seat right then so I could finish getting him in, keys included. I closed his door then went to open the passenger door to get my keys, oh know! Instant panic right? I could see it now, a mug of my distressed face on the news telling of how I locked my toddler and keys in the car in freezing weather, and now he was in hospital with hypothermia. Followed by an obvious warning to parents to never do this...duh! Okay, so luckily it ended way better than that. I hurried back into the UPS where I just was and told them of what I had done (pretty embarrassing). Another customer said he had the number to the Orem police on his cell phone. I know, a little weird he had the police on speed dial, but thats besides the point. I called and about the longest 15-20 minutes later they were there and opened the door with no problem. Oliver was perfectly fine, it was actually me that was freezing because I was standing outside that entire time.

Anyhow, lesson learned. 1-Never make fun of someone for making a mistake, especially your husband. (Mike was very understanding when I told him, which almost made me feel like more of a jerk). 2-The police can fix some idiotic mistakes. 3-Always keep your keys on you!

This is proof that Oliver is not traumatized by the whole experience.

Rewind

Even though I was out of commission for a few weeks, life still went on its usual course. My brother Dave and his wife Ashley had their first baby, Dominic, in October. We're all so happy that he's here and is a healthy baby boy. Oliver did not know what to think about Dominic when he first met him. We carved pumpkins this year with the MacKay's and were very excited to use these cool stencils. Our neighbors carved some amazing pumpkins this way so we wanted to try it out. Too bad it took so long that everyone else was done carving, cleaned up, with pictures taken before we even finished! We went to my sister's house on Halloween night for trick-or-treating. One of Oliver's cousins is about six months older than him, it's a love/hate relationship with these two. One morning I woke up to find Oliver's face looking like this (Kate has a vicious claw...or fingernails). However, Oliver wasn't completely innocent in this little cat fight...Kate had a nice big bite mark on her chest. Oliver was in desperate need of a haircut and Mike insisted on doing it himself. Well, we finally got the Internet a couple days ago and for some reason I feel obliged to post something. Here is what we have been up to:

We made the huge move south to Provo at the beginning of August. Everyone up north (Davis county) keeps asking us how it is to live in 'happy valley'. My reply is that we're actually in 'little Mexico' and that no place could be more White and Mormon (aka 'happy valley') than Davis County, more specifically Centerville/Bountiful. This is my father-in-law's favorite place in the world and he knows it like the back of his hand. One MacKay gene that Mike did not get was the OCD for planning and organization (which can be good and bad). We of course got our itineraries six months ago by email and subsuquent emails with further details after that. Not to mention frequent reminders at Sunday dinners. All in all, we had a good time with family and were pretty exhausted when we get home...isn't that a sign of a good vacation?

This is the bike/hike we took on the first full day there to a place called Osprey Falls. I think this was the only place my father-in-law had not been, hence he did not know how long or steep the hike was! We did a round trip of 9.6 miles to the falls, but it was worth it when we got there.

Wildlife...we had a picture taking contest so everyone was doing their best to get pictures of the animals. We haven't had the official judging yet, so we'll see. Like when he watched me shovel some dirt, next thing you know he picks up the shovel and pushes it in the dirt. He loves brushing his teeth with an electric toothbrush like us as well. He's also tired of his little plastic basketball hoop, he wants to go outside and shoot balls into the real hoop. My personal favorite is when a group of us are laughing and he joins in with his fake laugh. I love the age Oliver is at now, it's so much fun to watch him grown and learn new things. Though I loved it when he was seven months and learning to crawl and ten months learning to walk. So I guess what I'm saying is that I have loved watching Oliver in whatever stage he is currently in.

P-town baby!

It's official, we are moving to P-town this fall because Mike got a one-year position at BYU! Yes, we are pretty freakin' stoked about the fact that Mike will have his first full time paying job in our five years of marriage. (And when I say "we", I really mean ME)! Honestly, it was looking pretty bleak for him getting a job this fall at a university, but fortunately we got the Mormon thing going for us. In all seriousness we are really grateful for this opportunity, something I believe Mike fully deserves for all the hard work he has put into this PhD. Another thing I love about college ball is that there's no guarantee from year to year on any certain school. Take Florida for example, two time defending national champions, did not even make it into the tourney this year. Even if you don't follow college basketball, go ahead, fill out a bracket and see how the madness consumes you. It will. And you'll probably do better than those experts (or geeks) who spend hours going over statistics to fill out their brackets. So, who is my final four you say? North Carolina, Georgetown, Memphis and Xavier, with Georgetown upsetting to win it all of course.

Tuesdays with Morrie

I read this book a few years back when it was on the bestseller list and really loved it. However, I couldn't tell you the details of the book a few days after finishing it (as is the case when I finish most books). So when I saw it on my mom's desk one day I decided to read it again, though I don't normaly read books more than once. I forgot how touched and inspired I felt as I read about this man, Morrie. He was a complete optimist even in the face of death, which I truly admire. Reading about how ugly this disease is in the end really helped me have more compassion for my dad and the fears he faces. That said, you do not have to know anyone personally with this disease to appreciate the book, I would recommend it to everyone.

24 or The West Wing

We finally watched the sixth season of 24 and I'm glad there aren't anymore to catch up on! We have been addicted to this series ever since we were introduced to it in England. We would borrow our friends box sets and watch an entire season in a single weekend, sad but true. However, this last season was probably my least favorite, especially the ending. Come on, there is suppose to be some sort of cliffhanger at the end, not Jack starring out over the ocean - lame-o!

As much as we liked 24, our favorite TV drama series definitely has to be The West Wing. Again, some friends in England owned all seven seasons and we wasted a lot more time than I would like to admit. I felt like I learned a little bit more about politics, even though everything was ficitional. The series was brilliantly written and the characters were so addicting as well.

If Martin Sheen entered the presidential race today I would vote for him hands down and try to talk everyone I knew into voting for him also. What has been occupying my time you say? Well, besides chasing my little bundle of energy (Oliver), my younger brother had knee surgery (and 250+ pounds is not easy to help move around), my other brother and his wife moved in with the folks (yes, my parents have three adult children living at home with them now), I have taken up reading again and I'm a little ashamed to say that I can't get enough of guitar hero!

My brother Dave brought guitar hero with him when they moved in. I love it! It took me a few times to get the hang of it, but now I can play most songs on medium without getting booed off the stage. I really don't know how anyone plays hard or expert. Yes, it's a huge time waster and I feel guilty afterwards, but I'm completely in the zone while playing. My best song is, My Name is Jonas (Weezer). (He opened the door to my mom's curio cabinet the other day and brought me one of the figurines, thankfully it was all in one piece!) The characters in this story are fictional, but some of the events are historical. I would recommend this to everyone, it helped restore an attitude of gratitude for my life and empathize for people living in countries where some basic freedoms are not enjoyed. Believe it or not, they did not even put out everything they had this year. They said they did not want to put out the entire village this year because it's too much work, but I secretly knew they wanted to. So I insisted, though I was questioning that decision about the tenth time up the stairs carrying boxes so high I couldn't even see. There is a younger baby in the ward, but it's a girl and I guess they wanted to be politically correct.

I have to say that before the skit even started, Oliver went to touch the curtains on the stage and nearly fell off! Yes, it was very scary and not too promising for the upcoming skit. However, he did pretty good for the first five minutes, I just held his hand while he stood there. He waved to my mom sitting in the front taking pictures and even conducted the music with the chorister. He put on quite the show, and luckily when he was about to go completely ballistic, someone handed a candy cane up and saved the day!

Why buy toys?

Why bother with this . . .

When you can use this!

This is Oliver's first Christmas and everyone keeps asking us what we're getting for him. It's not like he's a newborn since he was born in January, so yes, he might enjoy some fun toys. Little do most people know, Oliver is like a little adult. He is not so much interested in fun, colorful, noisy toys as he is in everyday things such as vacuums, remotes and plugs. He would rather play with an envelope that has a window in it (because it makes that fun noise), but I'm wondering why the toys that make that same scrunchy noise aren't just as fun for him?! I have been thinking about getting a box and filling it with odd things around the house. That way we all win, Oliver is entertained and we don't have to spend any money! (Just kidding...not really though, that whole money saving idea is brilliant!) To give you an idea, here are some pictures of Oliver and his favorite things.

Kids say the darndest (but cutest) things

My sister always has her kids make cards for birthdays and they are so personal and cute. Thanks to Margaret I am doing this whole tagging thing, so here goes six things/habits you may not know about me.

1. Everyone knows how much I love watching sports, especially Jazz basketball, college football and March Madness to name a few. When we moved to England there were no such classic sports, instead it was soccer, cricket and darts. In cricket they wear white sweater vests, take tea breaks and the same guy can be up to bat for days! I have never enjoyed a sport where the final score could be 1-0 and darts is played by a bunch of long haired big guys wearing gold rings and necklaces (how that is even considered a sport is beyond me). Anyhow, to get to my point, I have always been the girl who liked to watch sports with the guys while the other girls turned their heads in disgust. In England I got to be one of those other girls and seriously turned my head in disgust to watching any sports whatsoever, it was kind of a new fun thing for me.

2. When I was a little girl I was always afraid our house would burn down or there would be a big earthquake. That might of stemmed from the fact that we always had earthquake drills in elementary school and had to get under our desks. I'm not sure why I was scared of the fire thing. I used to pray every night that our house wouldn't burn down and that there wouldn't be an earthquake.

3. Olives are a weird food, which is what I thought when I was a little girl. However, when I saw you could put them on your fingers and eat them like that I thought it looked like a lot of fun. So, I forced myself to like olives only so I could put them on my fingers. I still like them to this day, though I don't always eat them off my fingers.

4. I have strict rules when it comes to names for our children. They are very simple: spellable, pronounceable and not in the top ten most common names (this might not always be foreseeable, but to the best of our abilities at the time).

5. I am petrified of snakes, whether I see them on the television, in a book or heaven help me, in person. I believe this stems from when we had a snake in our yard on two occasions when I was younger. On one of those times, it had somehow gotten into my brothers pigeon cage (I know, pigeons as pets it's weird), and it was all curled up in the corner. My dad killed it with a pitch fork, yes you read that right, and then put it in the garbage can. One of my brothers convinced me to look in the garbage can and I saw a dead snake with it's eyes wide open starring at me. Ohhh, it's giving me the chills right now just thinking about it!

6. My secret dream job is to host a cooking show. I could totally talk about the food and ingredients the chefs were using and I could most definitely do some tasting afterwards! It would be pure heaven.

So I'm suppose to tag six more people, but I gotta be honest, I don't know six more people in the blogging world who haven't already done this. I know I shouldn't admit this because it makes me sound super lame-o and friendless, but alas the truth really hurts sometimes! So I'm not even going to post the rules, shame on me.

To blog or not to blog

Okay, so I totally stink at this blogging thing, hey I wasn't promising anything good. I have had good intentions, but then the time past. Like when the Fall Classic (a.k.a. World Series) was on, but then the Red Sox swept the Rockies so fast I didn't even know it happened. Then of course there was Oliver's first Halloween, but to be perfectly honest I just did not do it. Now it's nearly Thanksgiving and boy are we excited! It has been three years since we had the big schmorgesborg (I know the spelling is completely wrong), so we can't wait to stuff our faces and watch football!

Oliver is officially walking and everyone keeps telling me, you're really in for it now! Seriously, what is that suppose to mean? He has already been crawling and into everything for at least three months, not to mention he fell down a flight of stairs a couple weeks ago. What about the whole sleeping or not sleeping thing? So let's be honest, I have "been in for it" since the day he was born, and I'm still enjoying it! Oh, and about the whole fall sports thing which I was going to write about earlier, I just have two words: Go Jazz!

Favorite Oliver pics

This has to be a favorite because the face is classic, yes, but more so because he is a newborn. You're probably wondering why I named my blog Trump-MacKay. Actually, I was trying to be creative and not just name it Sara MacKay, but unfortunately my impatience succumbed to my creativeness (okay so I'm not really that creative either).

So here's the real story...When Mike and I got married he wanted me to hyphenate my name. Being the liberal that he is, he thinks it's ridiculous that in our culture women always give up their maiden name when they get married. Fortunately for me MacKay is a great last name, otherwise I might have seriously thought about the hyphenation thing. I definitely wouldn't want to be a Julia Gulia.

Also, another funny story about the name thing. I was most definitely glad I did not hyphenate my name when we moved to England. Apparently, Trump is not the powerful, money-grabbing name in England as it is in America. Oh no, it's no where near that cool and posh. The Brits like to say, "I trumped" when they pass gas. Oh yes, and Mike got a kick out of telling people my maiden name, especially his young men (what teenage boy wouldn't think that's funny?).
